The Breakthrough: Jake Brinn

This year has been a whirlwind for Jake Brinn, a 20 year old director/actor from Chesapeake Virginia, who has made a major splash on the local film scene within the last year. Behind the SoCal surfer looks and charismatic demeanor, is a young man that truly knows no limits. Since a young child Jake has always stood out among his peers as a disciplined leader and visionary. Jake is the son of an educator and entrepreneur, so for those who know him best, his current success comes as no surprise. Brinn was a graduate of Hickory High School and is currently studying film at Old Dominion University, where he is fearlessly fulfilling his destiny and becoming a star. Recently, Brinn's film GLIMPSE won the best overall film in the Hampton Roads 48 Film Festival, along with best director, best editing, best cinematography, and best actress. GLIMPSE went on to compete against all the other winners at FIlmapalooza in Atlanta, Georgia this past March. The P40 Network had the pleasure of  sitting down with the budding star to find out what motivates him and what his future holds.

P40: Did you always want to be an actor, and how did you get your start?

Brinn:  "I didn't always know that I wanted to be an actor, but I've been acting since I was little in the form of pretending I was characters from my favorite movies. My mom thought I was good at it so she signed me up with a local agent when I was fifteen. My first gig was as an extra in an industrial film, despite my role being insignificant, I fell in love with every aspect of the industry."

P40: If you could work with anyone in the film industry who would it be and why?

Brinn:  "There's a long list of actors and directors I would love to have the pleasure of working with within the industry. The first name that comes to mind is Damien Chazelle (Director of Whiplash). Whiplash was my favorite film of the year for many reasons, but most importantly it had an extremely powerful message. To be honest, the people I've been working alongside lately have been so incredible, i dont even think about it much."

P40: How do you view the film industry in Hampton Roads?

Brinn: "The industry in Hampton Roads can be described as small but growing. Everyone in the industry seems to know each other, so we do everything we can to help each other out."

P40: Who are some of your greatest mentors?

Brinn: " My greatest mentor is my father Lee Brinn, who happens to be my manager. Growing up he instilled in me disipline and focus, which I am so grateful for."

P40: What do you want to get out of a career in acting?

Brinn:  "All I can hope for is that one of my films impacts someones life in a postive way. "

P40: What are some of the challenges you've had to overcome to make it in the industry?

Brinn: "Starting late, I wish I had started when I was nine or ten, not fifteen. The biggest challenge I've faced in the past year was trying to produce and direct my films with virtually no budget."

P40: To date, who has been your biggest influence?

Brinn: "My biggest influences would have to be one of my closest friends and director of photography Christy Stevens."

P40: What can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?

Brinn:  "I just released two short films, Muse and Flourish, which you can view on either my facebook or vimeo account. They can be best described as personal videos, which are similar to music videos. I have two more narratives coming out this year (10-15 minute films). Also, I was just recently casted as the lead in an upcoming full length feature."

P40: So far what has been your proudest moment in your career?

Brinn:  "I would have to say my proudest moment was when GLIMPSE was announced as the BEST OVERALL FILM. I'd like to thank my mom, dad, and girlfriend who's been there for me for five years. They have always supported me and are always there for me. I couldn't ask for a better support system."
